About Us

A remote campground
with purpose.

Observatory Campground sits at the edge of the Cleveland National Forest, where the San Diego County high desert rises to meet the sky. This isn't a place for weekend noise — it's a destination for those who come to breathe deeply, listen to the wind through the pines, and rediscover what it means to be truly outdoors.

Named for its proximity to the world-famous Mount Palomar Observatory, the campground offers some of the darkest skies in Southern California. No streetlights. No glow from a nearby town. Just raw, unfiltered wilderness and the kind of silence that rewrites your sense of time.

The Experience

Three reasons to
pack your bag.

Stargazing like you've never seen it

With zero light pollution and an average of 280 clear nights per year, Observatory Campground is one of the darkest camping spots in all of Southern California. Bring a telescope — or just your eyes. The Milky Way will do the rest.

Trails that disappear into the sky

From your campsite, you're steps from trails that wind through chaparral, past wildflower meadows, and up to ridgelines with panoramic views of the desert below. Mount Palomar's observatory is a rewarding hike — and a piece of astronomy history waiting for you at the top.

Silence you can actually hear

No RV hookups. No crowded pull-throughs. Just well-spaced sites along a winding county road, each one feeling like your own private clearing. The only sounds are wind in the branches, crickets at dusk, and the occasional hoot of an owl.

Amenities & Details

Everything you need.
Nothing you don't.

We keep it simple and honest. This is a true campground — not a resort with a tent rental. Come prepared, and you'll find everything you need right here in the mountains.

Tent & RV Sites

Spacious sites accommodate both tents and recreational vehicles. First-come, first-served — arrive early on weekends.

Fire Rings & Picnic Tables

Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table. Bring your own firewood — collected wood is prohibited in the area.

Restrooms & Potable Water

Clean restroom facilities and potable water are available on-site. No showers or electrical hookups — this is backcountry comfort.

No Cell Service

Embrace the disconnection. Cell towers are far below — bring maps, plan ahead, and let the mountains do the talking.
